Mosaic on Main Street – Downtown Alhambra

In November 2002, the City of Alhambra completed its downtown revitalization project known as The Alhambra Renaissance Entertainment Center. The project included a 20,000 square foot City-owned public plaza, known as the Mosaic on Main that features decorative mosaic tile artwork.

Although Downtown Main Street historically was a thriving center for local commerce, a number of economic factors during the 1970’s-1980’s began to affect the Downtown.  Downtown Alhambra slowly succumbed to increased vacancies, a decline in commercial rental rates, inadequate parking, and substandard buildings compared to modern standards.

Today, Downtown Alhambra’s Mosaic on Main has blossomed with a restaurant row specializing in international and regional cuisine, shops and boutiques, entertainment venues, mixed-use development, a fitness center, and major retailers.  Working towards reinventing the Downtown, the City and the Redevelopment Agency have taken an aggressive role in creating a more livable, pedestrian-oriented district.

As a result of the Agency’s Business Attraction Program and its marketing efforts, redevelopment along Downtown Main Street has led to the opening of 43 new businesses and the creation of approximately 1,500 jobs.
