CityPlace is an exciting and successful mixed-use project that is the cornerstone in the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency’s revitalization efforts. It serves as the northern anchor in the Agency’s downtown revitalization efforts and provides an effective link to the Promenade and Pine Avenue, two retail-friendly districts in Downtown Long Beach.
CityPlace includes over 475,000 square feet of promotional and
neighborhood retail uses and over 300 residential units on eight city
blocks in the heart of Downtown Long Beach.
CityPlace replaced an obsolete enclosed mall – the Long Beach
Plaza. As was typical at that time, the mall was focused inward with few
storefronts facing the street, providing little synergy with the rest of
the downtown.
CityPlace reintroduced city streets around and through the project and
effectively incorporated both residential and retail uses into an urban
village. The project presents a pedestrian-friendly environment with a
number of plazas and walkways that provide linkages throughout the
project, as well as to the Promenade and Pine Avenue.
Nordstrom Rack,Wal-Mart and other major retailers provide a lure to
attract visitors to the downtown. The new Albertson’s represents
the first full-service grocery store built in the downtown area in over
50 years. Retail activity in the city’s central core has been
reinvigorated, providing approximately 850 jobs for residents and
additional tax dollars for the City and Agency.
CityPlace is a master-planned mixed-use project that has effectively
integrated surrounding uses so that the casual observer might not notice
where CityPlace ends and Downtown Long Beach begins. CityPlace
truly is a place where people want to be, want to shop, and want to
live.
