Distance Learning Program

The Distance Learning Environment

The CRA Distance Learning Program is conducted with a combination of a web-based conferencing system and an audio conference call using an audio conferencing service. The speaker, moderator, and participants “attend” the session from their own offices, using their desktop or laptop computers with Internet access, and a telephone. The speaker can present his or her presentation using Powerpoint slides, text slides created “on-the-fly,” polling slides, a “whiteboard” for free-hand drawing, web-links to other web-sites, and live demonstrations using other programs such as Excel or Word. Most presentations are based on Powerpoint slides. Attendees can make comments, ask questions, and have a dialogue with the presenter and the other attendees through the concurrent audio conference call.

Because experience shows that on-line learning events should last no more than 75 to 90 minutes, our events will be focused on specific topics and usually presented by a single speaker.

Cost of Distance Learning Events

Introductory sessions to familiarize CRA members with the on-line learning environment (“Introduction to CRA Distance Learning Program”) will be free, including the use of a toll-free number for accessing the audio conference call.

However, because CRA made a substantial investment in the web-conferencing system, a registration fee of $95 per site will be charged for future topic-oriented distance learning events to help recover the cost of that investment. Also, participants will be asked to pay for their own telephone calls to join the conference call.

Compared to usual registration fees and travel, hotel, and meal costs associated with on-site learning events, CRA feels the $95 per site registration fee plus the cost of the telephone call is nominal. Also, because several people can participate in the training at any given site (by using an LCD projector and a speakerphone), the cost per person can be further reduced.
